Purpose & Mission

NAMAD: Pioneering Progress in the Automotive Industry

In its relentless pursuit of a more diverse and inclusive automotive sector, the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) has set its sights on a compelling objective: to foster the substantial presence and active engagement of minority enterprises and a diverse workforce across every facet of the automotive economic landscape.

This ambitious mission encompasses several critical dimensions:

1. Empowering Minority-Owned Dealerships: NAMAD is unwavering in its commitment to drive up the number of minority-owned dealerships, ensuring they thrive in communities throughout America.

2. Championing Diversity in Manufacturing: Advocating resolutely, NAMAD seeks to usher in a new era of workplace and supplier diversity within the automotive manufacturing sphere.

3. Empowering Minority Participation: At its core, NAMAD is devoted to bolstering minority engagement within the automotive retail sales and service segments.

To breathe life into these ambitions, NAMAD tirelessly forges strategic alliances and relentlessly champions the advancement of business policies and practices that firmly place diversity and economic parity at the forefront of the American automotive industry.

A Glance at the Automotive Landscape

The automotive industry, a cornerstone of the American economy, has consistently contributed between 3 and 3.5 percent to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It serves as the livelihood for over 1.7 million individuals, encompassing roles from design and engineering to manufacturing and sales.

Intriguingly, the industry's reach extends far beyond its immediate sphere, touching various sectors through its extensive consumption of goods and services. The automotive sector's significance cannot be overstated; it's integral to the nation's industrial landscape.

Navigating Challenges, Embracing Diversity

Despite the automotive sector's indisputable importance, it faces a critical challenge - the underrepresentation of minorities in dealership ownership and operation. The United States Census Bureau's forecast that the present "majority" demographic will transition into a minority by 2043 underscores the urgency of addressing this imbalance.

NAMAD's diligent research brings to light some striking statistics:

- An impressive 32% of all new vehicles are purchased by minorities.

- Shockingly, only 6% of American automotive dealerships are minority-owned.

- Equally striking is the fact that 95% of minority dealers are first-generation owners.

- Despite significant potential, the growth of minority-owned dealerships has yet to rebound fully from peak numbers recorded in 2019 before the economic downturn.

Clearly, there's much ground to cover on the path to heightened diversity and inclusion within the automotive industry. NAMAD seizes the opportunity to take a leading role in catalyzing this transformation.

Pioneering Legacy: "Making Tracks" Documentary

The history of minority entrepreneurship within the automotive industry is a remarkable journey marked by resilience and pioneering spirit. NAMAD's documentary series, "Making Tracks: History of Minority Dealers," pays homage to the visionary African-American men and women who chose a path in franchised new car dealership ownership.

In the late 19th century, with the advent of the first automobile, an estimated 250 to 300 manufacturers emerged. While some, like Ford, GM, and Chrysler, secured a lasting presence, many faded into obscurity. Within this dynamic landscape, manufacturers made crucial decisions - establishing their sales outlets or collaborating with independent business entrepreneurs who could best represent their products.

NAMAD's documentary series delves into this rich heritage, illuminating the remarkable journey of those who ventured into franchised new car dealership ownership in the automotive industry.

Embrace the legacy, celebrate diversity, and join NAMAD on its transformative journey towards an equitable automotive future.
